How ARL SURA Began

Law 100 of 1993, and more specifically Decree 1295 of 1994, provided the basis for the restructuring of The General Professional Risk System. This is how the Compañía Suramericana de Seguros decided to participate in the Social Security sector, and initiated studies, which resulted in the subsequent founding of ARL SURA Professional Risk Administration.

In this process, the Compañía Suramericana de Seguros included an in-depth evaluation of the model successfully developed by their Chilean counterparts after over 30 years of experience in the field. Thus began a relationship with the Mutual de Seguridad de la Cámara Chilena de la Construcción, a company that performed a complete assessment of ARL SURA during their constitution as a new company and today, are shareholders.

ARL SURA as an ARP is one of three companies founded by Suramericana to attend to the social security needs of the country, together with the Entidad Promotora de Servicios de Salud (EPS) SUSALUD and the Administrator of Pension Funds (AFP) PROTECCIÓN.

Since 1996, ARL SURA has maintained their leadership position among the private sector ARP´s within the country. In order to guarantee the quality of their service, they have developed a quality control system that has been recognized by ICONTEC and awarded the Quality Assurance Control Certificate under ISO 9001 regulations, for designing and offering Professional Risk Administration services. It was the first ARP company in Colombia or Latin America to receive this distinction.

ARL SURA is characterized by their social commitment and leadership philosophy, and they understand their role within Professional Risk Administration in the country as being much more than only fulfilling the legal obligations of the same. On a daily basis, solutions oriented towards the clients' needs are being designed, aimed at achieving a better quality of life for workers and increasing productivity and competitiveness in the companies where they work, as important elements to achieve greater levels of social and economic development.

In order to achieve a prevention culture that preserves the invaluable integrity of every person and stimulates progress, the Company acts in partnership with their clients in caring for their collaborators, implementing risk intervention models according to the reality of each corporation and developing occupational health training programs at all levels.

What does ARL SURA do?

ARL SURA has three distinct business areas, in light of their corporate mission involving prevention, health and life insurance. Their principal objectives are:

Viñeta To establish promotional and preventative activities aimed at improving the working and health conditions of the working population.

Viñeta To offer medical attention to workers suffering from a professional illness or workplace accident.

Viñeta To recognize and pay affiliates economic compensation for temporary disabilities, permanent partial disabilities, deaths and funeral costs, derived from a workplace accident or professional sickness.

ARL SURA places great emphasis on the first point, as limiting accidents guarantees workers and businesses security, peace of mind and productivity. Although the greatest efforts are channeled towards prevention, all processes for attention and benefits payments are carried out under strict quality and efficiency parameters to guarantee optimal service in all coverage granted by ARL SURA.
